I used to think podcasts were really boring and uninteresting…until I found one I loved! Now that I’m a recruiter and regularly commute all over the island, podcasts have become my go-to car activity during crazy rush hour traffic, between appointments, and during lunchtimes when I have to eat out of my car.
How I Built This Podcast
If you’ve always wanted to know how some of the most successful businesses in the world were started and grown into the powerhouses they are today, then How I Built This by Guy Raz is the podcast for you! Speed recommended it to me (told you he’s the #besthusbandever) and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What I find so fascinating about the stories in How I Built This is that you realize very quickly that almost none of these company founders really knew what they were doing. AT ALL. They were just normal people with an idea.
We’ve all had ideas, right?! So what got them to the point where they can throw white yacht parties every weekend in Capri while I’m still here in my rented base housing dreaming about throwing white yacht parties every weekend in Capri?
The difference between me and them is that they:
- Took action to make their idea into reality. The more action they took, the more people they met that helped them, and the “luckier” they got. Taking action is the scariest part because the world judges, you know? But they did it.
- Failed their way to Success. The absolute certainty that they could figure anything out and get around any obstacle prevented them from quitting. It boggles my mind because it sounds so counterintuitive…but it works! This is probably the hardest part for most people.
- Had a passion for what they were doing to keep them constantly engaged. Even if they never earned a penny, they worked on a problem that they wanted to solve for the sake of solving the problem. If I ever get to this point, that’s when I’ll ~know~ I’m going to be on How I Built This one day!!
Marie Forleo Podcast
Marie Forleo is like that super stylish girlfriend that acknowledges her own flaws while still consistently giving you flawless advice. I love her! She makes you feel like you can do anything while still being true to yourself. How does she do this!?
As one of Oprah’s “thought leaders for the next generation”, she gives personal development and business advice. Marie is SO good, she was invited by Sir Richard Branson as a mentor to his Centre for Entrepreneurship. Two awesome billionaire fans can’t be wrong!
Not only does she have amazing hair, Marie is also down-to-earth, so articulate and breaks down her ideas in such a way that you end up thinking, “That totally makes sense!”. We all need a friend like that, right?!
Most, if not all, of her podcasts are audio versions of her award winning show Marie TV on her website. TIP: If you subscribe to her newsletter, you’ll get freebies like her “How To Get Anything You Want” audio training. If you want more training, sign up for her B-School.
My favorite Marie Forleo podcasts tend to be the ones where she interviews people like Bryce Dallas Howard, Simon Sinek (a favorite author of mine), Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, Dr. Mark Hyman… the list goes on and on!
I find myself learning so much about human nature, specifically my own, and how to implement strategies to help me reach my goals. Or, um, think about how to implement them, because, you know, I’m still working on failing my way to success!
Once again, it’s worth noting that she also subscribes to the idea that everything is “figureoutable” – in fact, that’s one her favorite words.
Brendon Bruchard Podcast
Brendon Bruchard focuses on self-development in a very intense way. I don’t remember how I discovered him, but I bet you can guess how I felt after reading his book “The Motivation Manifesto“!
He is SO amazing at transferring his energy to you while you’re listening to him. I have no desire to ever run a marathon….but I swear I could do it while listening to him speak! He’s considers himself the #1 high performance coach in the world and I totally believe him.
According to him, his life’s purpose is to help you “live, love and matter”. I’m totally down with that! I want to live. I want to love. I want to matter.
When I listen to his podcast in the car, I swear I say, “Oh!” or “That’s true!” or “Huh..” a million times out loud. He’s just so earnest and sincere and passionate about what he says, you can almost FEEL his heart trying to come out of his chest! I hear you, Brendon. I do.
If you like audiobooks, get “The Charge” and you’ll see what I mean. I generally dislike audiobooks but this one is my favorite. It’s in Brendon’s voice, which makes a huge difference.
One of my dreams is to go to one of his High Performance Academy LIVE events. I have a friend who is going through the online course, and she loves it! So jealous!
Recently, I bought his other book, “High Performance Habits” and plan to read it soon. Can’t get enough of this guy!
My friend Ryan Charaba recently started his own weekly podcast! So excited for him since it’s been a goal of his for a while. It’s called First Wakeups with Ryan Charaba and focuses on sharing stories of people across all spectrums of life to help foster deeper connections.
Ryan also offers life coaching services, and he’s amazing! I had one free session with him, and discovered a couple of things I hadn’t explored before. You can find Ryan on Facebook.
Although most phones now have native podcast apps, the Castbox app is my preferred way to listen to podcasts. Not only is it well-organized, but if you have both Apple & Android devices and want to stay synced, this is the way to go. It’s super easy to use and, best of all, it’s FREE!
