Interior design is something I’ve been interested in since high school, when I first saw Christopher Lowell in his DIY fabulousness on TV, doing home tours and showing us all how to upgrade our decor. He was HGTV before HGTV. Architectural Digest (AD) features many amazing homes I can’t afford, so OF COURSE I have to check out their home tours! Although this is an older feature, it’s absolutely, 100% my favorite AD home tour yet. Check it out and get inspired!
Home Tour Dreams
Sigh. McDreamy was literally in the house. In what was HIS house. Without me. The universe is so cruel because this house is as gorgeous as he is. In a minute, you’ll see why Patrick Dempsey’s home tour on Architectural Digest a few years ago is STILL one of my favorites.
The Man Behind the Home Tour
Sigh. Let me back up a bit. First of all, I seriously think Patrick Dempsey ages like a fine wine. He is so handsome, and seems so charming. Remember him in Can’t Buy Me Love?! He was super cute then, but nooooooooowwww… well, if I didn’t have such an amazing and sexy husband, I’d have run off to Hollywood to hunt him down. Nevermind that I suck at acting and have absolutely no business being in Hollywood. And I’m, um, married.
Second of all, according to reports like this one, he’s one of those rare Hollywood actors that actually fought to stay in his relationship. About three years ago, his wife asked him for a divorce. Instead of giving in, McDreamy said he wasn’t prepared to let go of their marriage and got to work! After going to counseling and fixing their issues, the adorable couple celebrated their 19th anniversary this year! Ugh. Can he be MORE perfect!? A man who will do anything to keep his family together is a KEEPER, ladies. Look for a McDreamy! P.S. I have one of those. *happy dance*
Clearly, Patrick Dempsey has great taste. Not only did he choose well in his life partner, as she seems just as committed to their relationship as he is, but he also chose exceptionally well in buying and living in this spectacular home! Let’s talk about it a bit.
Davis Studio & Residence Home Tour
The home was built by Frank Gehry in Malibu, California for renown artist & painter Ron Davis, so it’s called the Davis Studio & Residence. It’s no understatement to say that Mr. Gehry is an 89-year old architect extraordinaire! Many of his homes have become famous because they’re crazy amazing. Take a look at these 30 buildings he designed – the binocular one is pretty creative.
For this particular house, he used corrugated tin for the exterior, which wasn’t common during the time period it was built. Of course, nowadays you see it more commonly in the modular or fabricated home space. It sits on 3.5 acres of land AND you also get ocean views! There’s a pool, a pizza oven, a climbing wall, a fire pit… like, literally the only thing that’s missing is ME.
Patrick Dempsey and his family lived in the home for over 5 years before they sold it in 2015 for a cool $15 million. The house is gorgeous! My favorite thing about it is that it’s so full of light, which is highlighted really well by the natural, muted tones of the decor. It’s a great mix of woods, leathers, light stones, soft greens, white walls, and then pops of black to ground everything. I could definitely see myself living there. Although it isn’t tropical, it definitely has that California beachy artist vibe. Which I absolutely love, quite possibly even more than the Hawai’i tropical vibe.
The kitchen in this home is the perfect size. I could happily make waffles, eggs, whatever. Just let me cook in that kitchen and not only will I make whatever you want…I’ll even wash the dishes!! Actually, I’m lying. If I’m living in this house, I’m hiring someone to do the dishes. Maybe even two. At the same time while I watch. Hmmm. Maybe I can hire Patrick Dempsey to act like my dishwasher… I kid. Mostly.
The yard is also beautiful! Its like ordered chaos. You know they planned it out, but it looks like a yard that just grew that way naturally. Don’t you think those are the best kinds of yards?! It’s a perfect yard to gather around with family during the holidays, like Thanksgiving. Can you see yourself starting some new Thanksgiving traditions here?! I can! I can even see myself laying in a hammock, listening to my favorite podcasts, enjoying the breeze without a care in the world! It’s gorg.
Home Tour on Architectural Digest Site
Truly, the house is so special and I would take it even if it didn’t come with Patrick Dempsey. To view some beautiful shots of the home, you can visit the original Architectural Digest article here and Zillow here.
